He didn't find the wind chilling and the warmth of Jim's body pressed against him made him feel quite warm. Despite this, it was clear that autumn had come. "Are you content, Jim?" he murmured against his bond-mate's head. "Yeah, I'm fine, Spock", Kirk replied, shifting a little, making the hammock rock lightly. The hazel eyes met Spock's and the Vulcan brushed a stray lock off Jim's forehead. Spock's insides twisted as he saw how gaunt and tired Jim seemed. It was simply a matter of time now, Spock's mind knew it, but his heart had not quite accepted the truth yet. Unable to resist, he leaned forward and their lips met. The touch of Jim's lips was the greatest comfort. How would he live without Jim's kisses? Their kiss was soft and tender, a far cry from the passionate lovemaking they had once shared, and yetthe warmth and the radiance of Kirk's mind and soul were still thereas vibrant as ever. "Are you okay, Spock?" Kirk whispered as they drew apart. Spock closed his eyes and leaned back. "No," he admitted. "I find that I am not." "Spock. I'm sorry," Jim whispered and Spock felt the other's lips brush the palm of his hand tenderly. Pulling Jim into his arms in an embrace, Spock could no longer fight the tears. "I love you, Spock," Jim whispered. "And I, you, Jim," Spock replied with a broken voice. "It's not over yet." "No." But somehow Spock found it difficult to believe. Jim's form was so thin and frail in his arms. Illogical as it may seem, in Spock's mind, Jim was still the brash young Starship captain he met so many years ago. But time had caught up with them, and soon, Spock knew he would be alone. END |
