THE TRUTH OF YOU

I have heard people say your hair is golden.
I do not see it.
It is dark blond
and beautiful in its own right.

Women proclaim your eyes are liquid fire.
I have not noticed.
They are in fact a common hazel
and they see right through my soul.

They compare your laughter with honey.
I cannot hear it.
I only know that it sets me free.

I have heard lovers say your touch is like a flame.
I do not know;
I simply burn when you are near
and you lay your hands on me.

They say your smile is like the sun.
It is not true;
It lights up your face and eyes.
That is all--and it pierces my heart.

Someone said you were tall.
I do not agree.
You are much shorter than I;
I imagine you would fit in my embrace.

Rumors say you leave broken hearts behind you.
I hope they are wrong.
For you hold my heart in your hands,
and I pray you will treat it well.

No other knows the truth of you.
Poetry is not needed to emphasize who you are.
You are more precious to me
than gold, than honey, or the sun itself.
