True Happiness
“I have everything going for me… three Pulitzer prizes, a good job and a small farm. So why am I so unhappy?” Clark asked Lex as they walked from Jonathan’s grave.
“I don’t know, Clark…You think I am happy? I am a multibillionaire, just took over my father’s company…I am the most successful bachelor, yet I am completely miserable…” he looked into Clark’s eyes.
Warmth spread through him every time he looked into those beautiful eyes. How he longed just to be near him! Lex had never had that feeling before, not with any woman excluding his mother and certainly not with another man… to him, they were all cheep fucks, including Victoria and Helen.
Clark stopped suddenly and looked into Lex’s eyes intently. A smile spread across his face as Lex’s warmth radiated from him. Clark had been with men before, mostly in college, but none of them ever had this effect on him.
Both men felt the tightening of their pants and wanted to break away to relieve some of the pressure, but neither could look away. Clark was the first to make a move; he moved closer to Lex, placing a hand on his shoulder. Lex held his breath as he placed a leather gloved hand on Clark’s cheek and stroked his cheek bone with his thumb. In the cold November air both men’s breath could be seen, until suddenly it wasn’t visible anymore. Clark had leaned down and kissed Lex, softly at first until Lex kissed back and the kiss became a kiss of want, need, completion. Clark broke away slowly and looked into Lex’s eyes.
“Well…that answered something…”
“What did it answer, Clark?”
“Whether you had romantic feelings for me or not…”
“I always have, Clark.”
They began to walk towards Clark’s car and Lex took Clark’s hand in his.
“How come you never acted on them before?”
“Didn’t know…scared of rejection…your father’s shot gun…” Lex laughed and Clark squeezed his hand softly.
“Ah…I would have protected you…you know I always do.” Clark kissed him softly again. Lex kissed back and then looked at his watch.
“You mother probably has Thanksgiving dinner on the table.” Clark’s cell went off. Looking down at the number, he saw it was his mother. He laughed and looked at Lex
“Speak of the angel!” He answered it.
“Hey, mom!”
“Where are you and Lex?”
“Visiting Dad’s grave…we are at the car now.”
“Oh, ok…well, I have dinner ready…how many places do I need to set out?” Clark looked up at Lex “Mom wants to know if you are coming, Lex.”
“Tell her I would be delighted to join her and her son for Thanksgiving…sounds a lot better than what I had planned.”
“Mom? Set out four place settings. Yes, four…You, Lex, Me and Dad. Yes, Dad…I have something to tell the both of you…and I want Dad to be there. Ok…I’ll see you in a second. Love ya too, Mom!” With that he hung up.
Lex looked at him trying to figure out what he needed to tell them. Clark saw the face as they got into the truck.
“You’re thinking about something…what?”
“What are you going to tell your folks?”
“That you and me are a couple…and couldn’t be happier...that’s if you say yes…” He began to drive towards the farm.
“Are you asking me?”
“Lex…will you go out with me?”
“Yes, Clark.”
He looked at Clark and smiled. Clark just blushed, taking it in. A few moments later they were pulling up to the farm. Martha was waiting out on the porch when they arrived. Clark and Lex got out, she smiled and ran up to them, giving them both a big hug.
“I just put a pot of coffee on…would you like some, Lex?”
“Yes, please.”
“Clark?”
“Hot Chocolate, please, mom?”
“Sure…now come inside before you catch your death of cold!” She walked inside the house. Clark took his hand and kissed him softly.
“Your lips are addicting, Lex.”
“Other parts of me can be, too…” Lex whispered in his ear. Clark blushed and they walked hand in hand inside the house.
Inside the house, two cups of steaming liquid were waiting for them, both in “their cup”. Clark’s was a plain brilliant blue cup that reminded him of the skies. Lex’s was black. When Clark asked him why he always used that black cup, Lex’s reply was, “I don’t know…I guess it reminds me of my life…always in darkness.” Lex picked up his cup and sipped it before walking over to Martha setting out the table.
“Can I help you, Martha?”
“Oh, no, that’s fine, Lex…I’m almost done…there!” she placed the last fork down. “So, Lex…what were your plans for Thanksgiving?”
“Coming here and spending it with you, of course!” He smiled.
“Yeah…and Bessie out there gives me pure gold milk…Lex…I’m a mother…and I have
been around you for a while…” Lex sighed admitting defeat.
“I was going to spend Thanksgiving a lone, more than likely get drunk…”
“Well, this is much better, isn’t it, Lex,” Clark said, finishing his cup. He walked over to Lex and smiled. A timer went off and Martha went over to the oven and pulled out an apple pie, setting it on the window seal.
Lex and Clark sat very close to each other in the living room, chatting while Martha pulled the pie out. Martha joined them a few minutes later, noting with a smile how close the boys were. Clark’s sophomore year of college out at MU was when he came out to Martha and Jonathan that he was bi. Martha was surprised but happy for him…Jonathan was surprised but it took a while to get used to the fact that he had a bi-sexual son. They chatted for about an hour before they sat down at the dinner table. As a tradition, everyone had to tell something that they were thankful for. Martha started.
“I am thankful for my family…I don’t know what I would do with out them.”
Clark was next.
“I am thankful that I found true happiness…” He placed a hand on Lex’s leg.
“I am thankful for this family…even though I am a “Luthor”, you have treated me like Lex…like I am a son in this family.”
Martha smiled and handed Lex the carving tools for the turkey that was set before them.
“Lex…will you do the honors?”
“I would be more than happy to.”
Lex carved the turkey beautifully. About half way through the meal Clark clinked his glass and every one looked at him.
“I have an announcement to make!” He stood up, “As you all know…I am bi--and proud of it-- but that’s not my announcement…” He smiled at Lex. “As you know, I have been looking for true happiness and I am glad to say I have found it…in Lex. Mom…” He looked at the empty place setting where his father would be, “Dad…” He took Lex’s hand in his, “Lex and I are a couple…and I couldn’t be happier. That’s all.”
With that, he sat down. Martha was surprised at first, but a smile came to her face as she got up and hugged them tight.
“Well, Lex…I guess you are family now.” She smiled as she sat down.
They finished their meal. Completely stuffed and happy, they retired to the living room again, where they played trivial pursuit like the family always had. Lex smiled as he looked around sipping his coffee after a piece of apple pie. He was a part of the family now…and like Clark had put…he couldn’t be happier.
