LOVE AND MEMORIES

Martha Kent, sitting in her favourite rocking chair, is going through her old journals and albums.  Her husband, Jonathan, comes into the room and asks her what she is doing.

“I’m just reminiscing, sweetheart.”  “About what, gorgeous?” Jon gives Martha a big hug and kiss and sits down next to her.

“I’m just going through my old journals from when Clark was a teenager.  Just looking back at our son and all he’s gone through.  You know, Jon, all of my most important memories are in these books. ”

“Jon, did you ever think that the sweet little boy we found in the field that day would grow up to become Superman?”

“No, I never thought about it.  I mean, we always knew that Clark was special but I don’t think that I ever thought that he would become the world’s super hero.  You know what shocked me even more though, Martha?  I never thought that our son would fall in love with Lex Luthor and marry him, did you?”

Martha stops and thinks for a second before answering Jon, “I don’t know about that, Jon.  There was something special between Clark and Lex from the moment they met.  That’s what this one journal here is all about.”

“Jon, just look at this picture that was taken the day Clark saved Lex’s life for the first time.  You can see that they felt something for each other right at that moment.”

Martha and Jonathan look at a picture of Clark and Lex sitting on the bank by the bridge where Lex’s car went off the bridge.  Clark is leaning over Lex and they are both wrapped in blankets so they can warm up after being in the river.  Lex and Clark are looking at each other and it’s like they can’t tear away their gazes from each other.  You can see the fascination, desire to know each other and that they’ve already formed a bond, not to mention the lust if you look for it.

“Martha, I don’t know if they fell in love that day but I’m sure that it wasn’t long after that.  I don’t think they knew what it was at first, especially Lex, never having really been loved by anybody or loving them.”

“Jon, do you remember the day that you made Clark return the truck.”

“I’ll always remember the look on his face when he saw the truck and how he looked when he had to go to the castle and return it.”

They remember Clark’s disappointed expression when he had to bring the truck back and how they had expected him to be moping around the house and barn when he got back but he was almost bouncing.  He was so happy over his new friend, he almost reminded me of a little boy with a new favourite toy.  After the pain he had felt when his dad had told him of his real entrance into their life, Jonathan and Martha had worried that he might not bounce back from all of the new information that he had to deal with.

Even so, Jon was worried about Clark being friends with a Luthor, he just couldn’t figure out what they could possibly have in common.  Martha, however, having seen the sparks from the very first, decided that Clark should be able to see Lex if he wanted.  Like she had explained to him, they didn’t know what would be a normal relationship for Clark, what way his culture worked.

Martha, looking through her journal, remembers all the times Lex tried to help Clark, either by giving him gifts, being there whenever Clark had questions that he didn’t want to ask his parents,  or trying to set up dates for him with Lana.  Even though Martha was sure that Lex fell in love with Clark right away, he didn’t try to push any kind of relationship with Clark except friendship and when he thought Clark was in love with Lana, he did everything in his power to see that Clark ended up with Lana as his girlfriend.  These actions told Martha that Lex truly loved Clark and just wanted him to be happy, even if Lex was just in the picture as Clark’s friend.

She remembers the day that Earl took the class hostage and how Lex traded himself for the students, how he was willing to risk his life so that Clark could be safe. Martha thinks back how Clark wouldn’t leave the plant with Lex inside and how he saved Lex from being killed when Earl’s jitters almost caused the catwalk to collapse.  Knowing how much pain Clark must have in being so close to the meteor fragments in Earl’s body, and still hauling Lex and Earl up off the catwalk because he couldn’t bear to have Lex die, Martha knew that Lex wasn’t the only one in love.

Martha thinks about all the times that Clark and Lex saved each other over the next few months and how Clark tried dating some of the girls in his class, even though he had such strong feelings for Lex.  She felt bad for the girls who had crushes on Clark, especially Chloe and then later on, Lana because she knew that Clark did not mean to hurt them by leading them on, but he hadn’t admitted to himself yet that he was in love with Lex and so he tried, however, none of this worked.  It was particularly bad after Clark left Chloe at the Spring Formal, to save Lana and the others caught in the middle of the tornado.  Then when the trouble happened with Nixon, and Lex killed him to save Jonathan’s life, even Jonathan had to admit Lex wasn’t his father and that he did whatever he could to protect Clark.

She remembers how Jonathan was slowly warming up to Lex, because even he couldn’t be stubborn enough, not to admit how clear it was that the boys really cared for each other.  Until “The Wedding”, that is.

While Martha has been rocking and thinking, Jonathan has been flicking through the album, looking at pictures of Clark and comes across a picture of Clark at Lex’s wedding to Miss Trampy, or Desiree.

“Martha, do you remember this, how Clark was blown away when Lex came back from Europe engaged to that thing, how hurt he was?”

“Remember though, Jonathan, how it wasn’t Lex’s fault, she was controlling him.  Remember what she did to you, to make you try to kill Lex.”

Martha thinks back to all the trouble that woman caused and all the hurt.  The only good that Martha could see coming out of that mess was that it was the first time that Clark admitted to himself that he had feelings for Lex, that it hurt him to think of Lex being with somebody else and seeing Lex pulling inside himself for awhile and Clark getting him past that.

After they got through all that mess, she remembers what happened with the school ring and how Clark changed into this new, not so likable person.  She thinks about how Lex cared enough to find out what was going even he could have taken advantage of this new Clark and gotten what he had wanted.  Lex could’ve had everything he wanted, Clark in Metropolis with him but he knew that there was something wrong and came and let them help Clark.

Then to have that poor disturbed woman come to town and try to claim Clark as her son, and telling Lex that they were brothers, kidnapping and trying to kill Lex, that only strengthened their bond.  After Lex recovered from yet another trauma, he and Clark finally got together and discussed what he had been brewing ever since they met.  They admitted that they were attracted to each other and had feelings for one another.

Martha looks up and asks her husband, “Jonathan, do you remember when they first admitted how they felt and how Lex came to see us.?”

“Oh, God, do I ever.”

Martha and Jonathan both think back to that day when Lex and Clark came out to them about how they felt, and they remember their shock when Lex said that he wouldn’t date Clark until he was 18 and out of high school so that Clark wouldn’t have to worry about anything, how he would be treated at school, how his friends might react.  They remember how Clark tricked Lex into going out right away by making Lex promise that they would go out for their first date for Clark’s 18th birthday.

Martha laughs thinking back when Clark said to Lex “What do you have planned for next month?” and the look of shock on Lex’s face.  Clark then explains to Lex that he is actually older than Lex thinks he is, that he started school late because he had to learn to speak English.  She smiles when she sees the pictures of their first date when Lex took Clark to Metropolis to a beautiful restaurant and then out to the theatre, Clark and Lex both looking so good in their suits, the love so clearly evident between the two of them already.

She looks down at Clark’s prom pictures and sees them looking so happy and the shock on pretty much everybody else’s faces at the prom when Lex and Clark show up holding hands.  Clark had told his best friends ahead of time and they were happy for them.  She thinks about the things that were said and done by some of the small-minded after the prom when everybody knew that they were a couple, especially Lionel Luthor.  She remembers how Lionel went out of his way to try and break them up, cause as much trouble as possible but it didn’t work.

She looks at the pictures and newspaper clippings from their wedding, seeing just how much in love they were and still are, reminiscing about she loved planning their wedding.  The two boys looked so handsome in their tuxes, standing side by side while the judge pronounced that they married as husbands for life.  She tears up as she looks at the newest photo and entry in her journal, the birth announcement for Clark and Lex’s first children.  She looks at pictures of her beautiful grandson and granddaughter, Martha Lilian and Jonathan Lionel, who look like just like their two dads and the woman who carried their babies for them, Chloe Ross.

“Can you believe it, Jon, that we are looking at our grandchildren. For a long time, we thought we would never have a child, now we have 2 beautiful angels.  Can you believe how fantastic life is.  Clark is a daddy and he and Lex love those babies so much, I just had to relive all the moments that lead us here.”
